Cristiano Ronaldo, Andres Iniesta, Frank Lampard, David Trezeguet, Andrea Pirlo, Samuel Eto'o, Iker Casillas, David Beckham, Miroslav Klose and the eventual winner Drogba, were all on the shortlist for the Golden Foot which is given to stand-out footballers who are over the age of 28 and still actively playing.
The accolade is given out by the Principality of Monaco every year after a panel of international journalists vote on who they feel deserves the honour most.
The winner also gets to leave a permanent mould of his feet on the Champions Promenade in Monaco.
The 35-year-old striker is the first African footballer to receive the award, and after Manchester United's Ryan Giggs won it in 2011, the former Chelsea hit-man is only the second player who has played extensively in the English Premier League and been honoured by the Principality in this fashion.
